ULD — Unit Load Device
Standardized air containers and pallets used to consolidate cargo.
Technical definition
Unit Load Device: containers (AKE/LD3, LD11…) and pallets (PMC, PAG) with IATA codes, defined dimensions and maximum weights. They allow efficient stowage and mechanized handling. Usable height differs between the lower hold and the main deck.
In plain terms
A ULD is a standardized air container or pallet where cargo is consolidated so it can be loaded onto the aircraft quickly and safely.
How it works in Chile
The ULD you pick determines how many boxes of fruit or salmon fit per position and whether you'll be limited by weight or by volume. During the cherry peak, PMC pallets dominate on freighters.
Common mistakes
- Assuming the same usable height in the lower hold as on the main deck.
- Ignoring the ULD contour when estimating capacity.
- Overlooking weight distribution and net stowage limits.
